Sustainable Style 101: A Guide to Natural Fibers

It’s Earth Day week, and what better way to celebrate the planet than by learning the ins and outs of sustainable fashion? In an industry saturated with microtrends, overproduction, and fast fashion, quality clothing can be difficult to find—unless you know what to look for. Resources like the Good On You directory rate the sustainability of thousands of brands, and this guide has you covered with a rundown of the most popular natural fibers and where to find them.

Why Go Natural?

Unlike natural fibers—which are composed of plant- or animal-based materials—synthetics (e.g., polyester, nylon, acrylic, etc.) are cheap, man-made alternatives that allow for mass production. Today, 60% of global textiles are synthetic, and these plastic materials can take up to 500 years to decompose.

That said, avoiding synthetic fibers entirely can be quite the feat. But by prioritizing quality over quantity, shopping secondhand, knowing what to look for on fabric labels, and—most importantly—wearing your clothes for as long as possible, you can reduce waste and contribute to the slow fashion cycle the world desperately needs.

1. Cotton

One of the most well-known and commonly used textiles, cotton is a plant-based fiber prized for its comfort, absorbency, and breathability, making it a staple for both apparel and home goods. Brands like Kotn and Pact specialize in 100% cotton or cotton-blend basics, ensuring sustainable practices with certifications like the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and Organic Content Standard (OCS). Whether it’s a brunch-approved dress or a casual top-and-jeans combo, cotton is a versatile material suited for every season and occasion.

2. Linen

Light and breezy, linen is a summer must-have to keep you feeling fresh on the hottest days and cozy on the coolest. Tropical vacays aren’t complete without an all-linen cover-up—think oversized button-up, baggy pants, and sandals. True to its name, Linenfox produces high-quality, timeless linen pieces in a variety of styles and colors, while Quince and Everlane offer similarly curated collections.

3. Silk

Nothing elevates an outfit quite like a coat. As the ultimate "cool girl" statement (and one of my personal favorites), simply throw on a faux fur jacket or a long trench on top of your regular ensemble to add that extra oomph. Together with basic pieces, this is an easy way to look effortlessly chic without sacrificing comfort.

4. Wool

Primarily harvested from sheep, wool is the go-to material for winter wear thanks to its natural insulation. Merino wool base layers worn beneath a thick wool coat will keep you toasty in the harshest cold. For milder weather, a simple wool cardigan or sweater layered over a plain tee and paired with your favorite pants makes for a cozy yet effortless ensemble. Mackage and TOTEME are popular high-end labels with top-notch wool coat selections, but Aritzia, & Other Stories, and COS offer affordable yet quality alternatives. As with any animal product, however, we recommend investing in secondhand wool pieces and only buying new when necessary to limit your environmental impact.
