Meet our community members: Alexandra

@aligobrien

Hi I’m Alexandra, an Editorial Intern at A Style Set. I’m so excited to kick off our newest series to meet other fashion lovers in our community! When I’m not writing blogs for our website, I’m diving deep into the latest fashion trends and keeping my finger on the pulse of different happenings in creative fields.

ABOUT ME

WHERE I’M FROM: Washington, D.C.

MY OOTD: I’m currently taking a year off of school to work and travel, and right now, I’m backpacking in Vietnam. Because of the restrictions of my packing space, my outfit options have been limited as of late, so I’ve included one of my favorite looks from before I left.

TRENDS I’M SEEING WHERE I LIVE: Before I left for Vietnam, I was living and working in Dubai for a music festival and talent management firm. It was a fashion lover's dream come true to be surrounded by such a diverse group of creative people. Here are some of the trends I was seeing:

INCORPORATING IDENTITY INTO FASHION

No pictures for this one because it’s really individual, but examples are incorporating one’s native language, symbols of home, and any element that is representative of one’s personal story.

My fashion philosophy

HOW I GOT INTO FASHION: My extended family has always been interested in fashion, and I always found myself drawn to the fun of putting together a cool outfit. Yet, as I entered my teen years, I began to experience a shift where fashion became a critical outfit for self-expression, and I noticed how I felt “me” to different degrees depending on how much I resonated with what I had styled. Most recently, living in Dubai and traveling has made fashion a cultural exchange, and I have been able to bring an increasing number of non-Western pieces into my wardrobe.

FASHION INSPIRATION: My cousin, Jessica! Here are some of my favorite looks she has put together:

CURRENT FASHION FAVORITES: It has been all about the accessories for me lately! Click to shop the shoes and eyewear I’ve been loving recently.

FAVORITE AESTHETIC:  I can’t say that there’s one aesthetic in particular that I love above all else, but if I had to choose, it would be a mix between the eclectic grandpa aesthetic and the clean girl aesthetic. I love classic, timeless, and well-constructed basics, especially as I’m trying to reduce my consumption of micro trends and low-quality pieces. However, it’s also important to me to have clothes that somewhat reflect a lifetime of curation and cool finds. I don’t think that the true eclectic grandpa aesthetic can be accomplished in a few weeks, rather over many decades of evolution in my fashion sense.

MY TREND PREDICTIONS: Over the next few months, I think we’re going to see an overall simplification of some of the over-the-top pieces and production that have dominated the fashion scene for the past few years. Generally, I think people are getting sick of micro-trends, of constantly feeling that they don’t quite like what they’re wearing because it doesn’t look like what they’ve seen on Pinterest, and feeling the need to buy things to fit into an aesthetic. In the coming months and years, I think the focus will shift back to timeless pieces, and the real intrigue will come from individual styling, something that is harder to mass-replicate.

FASHION TRENDS I DISLIKE:

  • Capris: I’ve seen others style them in such cool ways, but I just can’t make them work on myself

  • Overly Western Looks: Listen, I love Beyoncé just as much (probably more) than the next girl, but I am not loving the Western influences that Cowboy Carter is bringing to pop culture. It’s really hard to successfully dress in that style without it looking somewhat like a Halloween costume.

FAVORITE PART ABOUT INTERNING AT A STYLE SET: My favorite part about interning at A Style Set has been really distilling the elements of what I like and don’t like when it comes to fashion. I think I’ve developed a better understanding of why I’m drawn to certain pieces, whether that is shape, color, material, etc. This has made both shopping and getting dressed an easier process! I’ve also loved being able to dive into the more sociological side of fashion and questioning how the trends and styles we are seeing can offer a commentary on our society.
